The canonicalNameĪttribute is similar to distinguishedName, but with the domain components in reverse order delimited by slashes rather than commas. Only distinguishedName, sAMAccountName, objectSID, and objectGUID uniquely identify the object. The RDN does not uniquely identify the object. The RDN of any object must be unique in the parent/OU container, but not in the domain. The Name property returns the RDN of any object (this is also the field labeled "Name" in ADUC). For domain component objects, it's the dc attribute. For OU objects, the RDN is the value of the ou attribute. For user, group, computer, and container objects, the RDN is the value This is the name of the object in it's parent OU/Container. Each class of object in AD has one attribute that is the Relative Distinguished Name (RDN) of the object.
